Applications under this initiative should address research priorities which will meet the health needs of vulnerable communities in Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam or Thailand. Applications must propose innovative world-class research programmes, and can include plans to strengthen research training and build career pathways for researchers in the region. Newton funding can only be awarded to research projects that are compliant with Official Development Assistance (ODA) criteria. The criteria require that any Newton Fund project must make it clear that its primary purpose is to promote economic development and welfare in low and middle income settings and to address poverty and development issues. Research areas of particular interest include the following, but proposals addressing other topics of importance for the region will also be considered:
Eligibility requirements Applicants may be from Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam or Thailand, or from the UK, but the focus of the research must be in the South-east Asia partner countries and strong partnerships with local researchers must be demonstrated. Successful applications will be jointly funded by the Wellcome Trust and the Medical Research Council as delivery partner for the UK government Newton Fund.
