The Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), in partnership with the Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC) of the Ateneo de Manila University, hosted a two-day kick-off meeting on “eHealth Technologies and Data Governance” on 27 to 28 February 2017 at San Alberto Hurtado Hall, Ateneo de Manila University, Quezon City and Capitol Resort Hotel, Lingayen, Pangasinan, respectively.

The Special Programme for Research and Training in Infectious Diseases (TDR) is calling for collaborative research proposals on health and environment specifically on innovative socioecological strategies for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases.

The call is focused on transdisciplinary research on health and environment leading to the development of community-participatory strategies for the prevention and control of vector-borne diseases (VBD). The proposed research project should "utilize an ecosystem-based approach and explore how innovative VBD control tools and strategies can be used more effectively among vulnerable populations."

MAKATI CITY, Manila- The ASEAN Network for Drugs, Diagnostics, Vaccines and Traditional Medicines Innovation (ASEAN-NDI) and the World Health Organization Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (WHO TDR) hosted the “Expert Panel Consultation on Health and Environment” on 5-6 April 2016 at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel.

The ASEAN Network for Drugs, Diagnostics, Vaccines, and Traditional Medicines Innovation (ASEAN-NDI) conducted two activities during the pre-conference of the Global Forum on Research and Innovation for Health on 24 August 2015 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), Manila. These are the ASEAN-NDI Communities of Practice (CoP) on Drugs, Diagnostics and Vaccines Meeting and the Regional Consultation on R&D Collaboration on Environment and Health.

The Newton Fund is a new UK government initiative intended to strengthen research and innovation partnerships between the UK and emerging knowledge economies. In partnership with the Medical Research Council, the Wellcome Trust will deliver Newton Fund research activities within its funding remit in South-east Asia.

Nominations for the 2015 APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (ASPIRE) Prize through APEC Policy Partnership on Science, Technology and Innovation (PPSTI) is now open.  The APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research and Education (“ASPIRE”) is an annual award which recognizes young scientists who have demonstrated a commitment to both excellence in scientific research, as evidenced by scholarly publication and cooperation with scientists from other APEC member economies.

With the vision of advancing together as one community, delegates from the ASEAN member states convened on June 26 – 27, 2014 for the 1st ASEAN – Network for Drugs, Diagnostics, Vaccines, and Traditional Medicine Innovation (ASEAN-NDI) Community of Practice on Traditional Medicine Meeting at Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City, Philippines.

Presenting the ASEAN-NDI initiatives, Dr. Jaime C. Montoya, the ASEAN-NDI Secretariat Coordinator, emphasized the need to develop collaborative innovations on traditional medicine in addressing the escalating cost and poor access to modern medicine, which were prevalent in some ASEAN countries.

Stakeholders of the ASEAN – Network for Drugs, Diagnostics, Vaccines, and Traditional Medicine Innovation (ASEAN-NDI) convened last June 5 at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City, Philippines, to discuss the network’s Strategic Business Plan (SBP), learn from the best practices/experience of other regional R&D innovation networks in China and Africa, and lay down plans for ASEAN-NDI, including the proposed activities and funding opportunities for the network.

1. Rationale

The global biomedical industry continues to grow at impressive rates. The growth is non homogenous.  Asia for example has experienced a growth rate of over 10% per year over the last decade.  While powerhouse countries like China, Korea and Japan have accounted for the majority of the Asian market, domestic growth in South East Asia (ASEAN) countries are fast expanding, and should not be overlooked. In 2015, ten countries in the region will join and become a single market and population, known as the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).

NAY PYI TAW, MYANMAR- Leaders, Delegates, and Representatives from the region are now holding the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) 63rd Meeting of the Committee on Science and Technology (COST) at the Myanmar International Convention Center (MICC) on May 14-18, 2012.

Task force members of the ASEAN Network for Drug, Diagnostics, and Vaccines Innovation (ASEAN-NDI) held a teleconference at the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) in Makati City last February 28, 2012 to review its draft Strategic Business Plan (SBP).

“The meeting was called to provide the task force members information on the progress of the SBP project. It also aims to gather reactions and post clarifications on the questionnaire provided prior to the meeting to make sure that the draft report for the project will address issues applicable to most of the countries,” explained Professor Federico Macaranas of AIM, SBP program leader and moderator of the meeting.

In continuing its pursuit of establishing a network for the region, ASEAN-NDI conducted a meeting of the Task Force (TF) members held on 20 October 2011 at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Makati City, Philippines. The objective of the meeting is to discuss and agree on the framework/ initial outline of the draft ASEAN-NDI Startegic Business Plan (SBP) and the timelines for consultations/ discussions by the business development expert with the TF members. The meeting was organized to be a venue for the discussion of the SBP for ASEAN-NDI, and identification of strategies geared towards the future implementation of collaborations and partnerships within ASEAN on innovation.

Another milestone in Research & Development (R&D) innovation was accomplished on December 6, 2010 at the Dusit Thani Manila Hotel, Makati City during the meeting of ASEAN representatives and World Health Organization (WHO) officials. The said event was organized to hold the 2nd meeting of Country Coordinators of the ASEAN product R&D mapping for infectious diseases, and consult with other ASEAN representatives regarding the plan for the proposed ASEAN Network for Drugs, Diagnostics and Vaccines Innovation (ASEAN-NDI).
