CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The ASEAN Network for Drugs, Diagnostics, Vaccines, and Traditional Medicine Innovation (ASEAN-NDI) was identified by the WHO Western Pacific Region’s (WHO WPRO) to develop proposals which aim to bring together initiatives proposing innovative mechanisms to coordinate and finance the development of health products and technologies for diseases that disproportionately affect poor populations.

This is in line with the Consultative Expert Working Group on Research and Development (CEWG) resolution which aims “to examine current financing and coordination of research and development, as well as proposals for new and innovative sources of financing to stimulate research and development related to Type II and Type III diseases and the specific research and development needs of developing countries in relation to Type I diseases,” which was drafted during the Sixty-sixth World Health Assembly. WHO CAN APPLY

This call for proposals is open to networks, academic and research centers, public health organizations, and researchers who can prepare winnable and innovative demonstration projects aligned with the CEWG requirements that touch on / emphasize the following:

  1. development of drugs, diagnostics, and vaccines;
  2. addressing diseases disproportionately affecting developing countries, preferably projects addressing region-wide problems;
  3. innovative collaboration mechanisms on health R&D at national, regional and global levels in order to maximize synergies;
  4. Harmonizing sustainable financing mechanisms for health R&D;
  5. capacity-building on health research and development (R&D);
  6. transfer of technology and manufacture of health products in developing countries;

Please note that the projects will be under the ASEAN-NDI umbrella and should be done preferably in collaboration with at least two other ASEAN member states.

NEXT STEPS

The proposals will be reviewed in accordance with the call objectives. Those which will qualify will be forwarded to WHO-WPRO on 01 November 2013 for further assessment and consideration to be included in the global technical consultative meeting on 3-5 December 2013.
